There are many different types of characters in IT – one of them yours truly. I have started my new temporary work today, on loan to the IT part of my work place (as opposed to the digital media bit that I’m usually stationed in). Now that I’ve done the content, the networking (as in social) and technical part of the information technologies I have a prediction to make: there have been cop dramas, doctor dramas, next on the menu – IT dramas.

And not the IT Crowd, which is an equivalent of Scrubs. I’m thinking more like Gray’s Anatomy. Only more intelligent.

Think about it. What is the appeal of police and medical dramas? The fact that we all depend on them, but because both jobs demand a particular type of psychic from potential employees it’s quite mysterious to the rest of humanity. Ditto for the IT experts. Especially now that we’re coming to depend on them more and more. All of us (you).

The only thing that has been the fact that every one associates IT specialists with geeks in too big jumpers with social skills equaling these of a dead hard drive. The thought of IT crowd dressed in hills or designer clothes (and not being completely thick and for decoration) and buzzing social life seemed slightly, let’s say, unreal.

These days the geeks are the ones with social life of all sorts. They get freebies, invites to parties, own the gizmos, and yes – the drama. They tend to get a bit drunk on popularity or importance, they have their own internal politics and sometimes there’s a lot of money involved. Think modern times MadMen. There have always been money and politics and romances (you would have thought the doctor’s in Grey’s Anatomy never do anything else than get of with one another) but some how now it has entered public consciousness.

For the benefit of any potential commissioners: I will write that series for you.

I’m an IT student and when I tell people what I do it seems I almost automatically loose 10 social points, not because I am a geek but because I’m passionate about IT and it’s not socially mainstream yet.
I’d watch a sophisticated IT drama, not based on stupid semi-teenage hackers, but based around colleagues in a modern media firm say, this would would turn out to be one of either fair city bad or Dexter great. Unlikely to happen I feel but I would watch anyway because being in IT is a lot supporting a football club because I feel we’re always defending ourselves from pop. And pop is no rock,

James,
pop is no rock, agreed. What I was thinking is that this position of IT in social scales is actually changing – slowly, but surely.
