Yes, this is my cat, Guinness. Due to his photogenic qualities Guinness features in several of my graphic works (like this one, which says ‘it’s alright to tell me’). Animals also have a unique communicative quality – they don’t speak, so we read into their expressions. This reading into visuals is at the foundations of graphic work. The idea behind visual communication is that people ‘read’ into the visual what we intended them too.

I was thinking a lot about looking for people who suit us (be it friends or partners or whomever else). I decided to give it the little romantic-comedy tacky approach to life spin – thought it could be funny to apply web language to it, probably because lolcats are the first feed i check each morning. So I went for the “refine search terms” which is close to what most search engines will tell you if your chosen terms don’t bring up many results.

I struggled with the pink, because it was either difficult to read (doesn’t go well with the wooden texture) or not pink enough. I wanted to keep the pink in as a link to the said romantic-comedies. In the end I settled for pink enough over readable, because I find these comedies difficult to ‘read’ any way. There is no way they make our lives easier.

This is also an exercise in how the size of words gives them an extra meaning. I don’t want a boyfriend actually. But I’m sure my cat thinks I do (and so on).

The picture came from one of these that my friends – god bless them – say ‘you could sell this’ about. I was also inspired, as I often am, by this strip from asofterworld. I absolutely love a softer world, especially the texts and how they are broken into 3 parts, I’ll allow myself to be a pantsy designer and say that it gives them a certain melody (because t does!). I could go on about it a lot, but I think it’s best you go and check it out.
