It’s this time of the year when all blogs go mad on endless list of best of 2008 and worst coming in the 2009 and so on and so on. As I’m writing this, I’m watching best of 2008 of Mock the Week and I shall proceed to watch Charlie Brooker’s summary of 2008 in tv (second time, because I love him). I was briefly thinking about compiling a list of films I’m most looking forward to in 2009, but really, google shows ‘about 420,000′ count on this sort of thing. So instead I’ll write about that one that has been making me dreamy for past few weeks… as for now, it might not be released at all.
Watchmen.
Yes, it’s based on that genius graphic novel (graphic novel is by the way a fancy term for a comics that is intellectually advanced enough to be literature) “Watchmen” written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons. Although Moore apparently said he wishes director Zack Snyder luck with the film and will never watch it…yeah. Any way, very broadly it’s a story that deals with the concept of hero and saviour, with society in demise and waiting for some one/thing to come and magically change it. You can get the basic essence from reading by reading just the introduction to the wikipedia article, so i’ll stop with the summary. It’s smart, multilayered and provides some of the best quotes ever (“No. Never compromise. Not even in the face of Armageddon.”)
The film by the looks of it will be amazing. I mean, seriously amazing. I’m not big on costume heroes drama but this is costume hero drama about costume hero drama (how postmodern!). And visually it’s impossibly beautiful. There have been 3 trailers out and this is my favorite so far:
Download This is embed from my currently favorite film website Film School Rejects. Check it out.
You might also want to watch the behind the scenes video diaries here, you will see how much of a scientific job directing has become. However they don’t have categories on this blog so you’ll have to fish them out . That’s another thing: official web coverage of the film is quite poor. All-flash-look-i’m-moving-around official website includes nothing more than list of characters, few wallpapers and a clock that counts down the time to official premiere, planned on march the 6th 2009.
If it comes out that is. Fox and Warner Bros are apparently arguing over the whole thing, and when two entities with a lot of money to pay their lawyers are arguing one can be sure that the fans who were willing to contribute to their income by buying theatre tickets will get their asses kicked.
If you feel up for making some sense out of the whole affair you can read David Poland’s post. Poland is a film journalist, and I know what you’re thinking, but this guy for a change is not nasty, frustrated and jealous. He actually makes sense. And sadly doesn’t have wikipedia page, but I recall he also used to be the director of the Miami Film Festival.
The whole thing reminds me of Moore’s bitter remarks about his conflict with DC over the ownership of Watchmen (“As far as I’m concerned, the 15th anniversary of Watchmen is purely a 15th Anniversary of when DC managed to take the Watchmen property from me and Dave [Gibbons].”) - clearly it’s hot property. I just hope it does show in cinemas on 6th of March, seriously it long enough as it is.

Daily Digest for 2009-01-03 added these pithy words on Jan 04 09 at 12:04 amI’m totally salivating over this movie, if it doesn’t go ahead I’ll be devastated!
Eventually the film will come out one way or another, it has to. There’s too much income in ticket sales, DVDs and merchandise sitting there just waiting to be collected. Alan Moore hates all film adaptations of his work and refuses to get involved with them mostly. Often they are pretty good films in their own right but miss the entire point of the book for the sake of a Hollywood ending, like V For Vendetta. I hope Watchmen won’t do that though as most serious comic fans I know who’ve seen previews love it. If they like it then most people will also. Can’t wait for it to come out :)
