5 minutes disco n.
a social event that is traditionally big in scale conducted with one or more aspects in a mini version.

Originally 5 minutes discos took place in our student halls, where we lived while on the 1st year at university. You might think a disco needs to take place in a club, crammed with people dancing for hours. Well we kept the people and loud music but minimised the venue to small students’ halls room number 24. It would start with putting a notice on the doors saying “5 minutes disco”, turning the music up and the full room would dance like maniacs for 5 minutes. Afterwards, slightly discharged everybody would return to their daily tasks (admittedly some 5 minutes turned into beer soaked all nighters).

There have been no 5 minutes discos for two years now and it is high time it returns, even more glamurous and with an artistic twist.

Our first 5 minutes disco event of 2008 will be an art show in the designercloths/goodies shop Kate&Tristan in New Cross, London (SE14). We are swapping big gallery space for a small shop, but the opening will be full blast. We will have live music from Johnny and art from Hannah Perry, projections, lights, soem free drinks and lots and lots of fabulous publicity. Watch this space for the definite date and come by to see us! (Afterwards there’s plenty of places you can go out to in New Cross, we’re the new Camden… apparently)

The second event, 5 minutes disco film fest is coming soon after. The fest might only last one evening, the films will be projected in a private flat (fabulous flat, might I add) and we are only hosting 15 guests, but the fest will be proper: independent films and filmmakers present, drinks, goodie bags and a double world premiere. You will also get a chance to talk to artists and press, learn about our upcoming events and win some tickets. If you are living in the London area or will be there in about month or so and are interested in a ticket give us a shout at 5min@halfbakedmedia.com. We only have 9 of them left already, there is no A, B or Z list, there’s only the list of good friends and interesting people.

If you can’t be with us but would like to take part nonetheless you can become part of our Message from film. Sent us your 10 to 15 seconds film/clip/mobile phone video or leave a message using the add video comment option below. We want to show messages from all over the world, so get filming!

5min disco Film Fest is also now officially opened for submissions. Selected films and authors will be promoted through the Fest publicity (again lots and lots of it) and the work will be shown on the final night together with some of the most interesting and daring independent video work from London, chosen by the 3-members 5min jury. We’re accepting a range of digital formats, so get in touch at 5min@halfbakedmedia.com

See you soon at a 5 minutes disco!
