…and we never heard of her again. Ha ha, you wish.
Anyhow. Being the curious little bugger that I am i decided I need to conquer the world of open source os. Now, I am a Mac girl through and through whatever the pigeons… I mean penguins think about it. I love everything about my macbook and my ipod touch, i use Adium for IM, I edit on Final Cut and I feel dirty about having to use MS Office, which I do because rest of the world does and because I’ve been using MS Word since I was about 8 (when you’re that young you don’t know any better). I love me some Photoshop or better yet Illustrator (Illustrator + fixedSys font = hours of graphic joy) but my photos are held and basically edited in iPhoto. I know the short cuts for Mac OS to the point of my fingers being fully compatible with Leopard.
If I have to use windows I quickly get annoyed. Really annoyed.
But there are times in every girls life when she has to leap into an unknown territory. Enter Linux.
So, over next few weeks I shall be the karate kid and Dan of Linux Outlaws will be my guru, Mr Miyaghi (that’s the comparison he drew, I prefer Million Dollar Baby) and I will report back from time to time to the guys over at LO - add a little female touch to the linux podcasting enterprise.
Lesson from the guru #1:
don’t install Fedora (he did and the sound is not working. There is no way I’m not having sound for longer than 15 seconds without going mad). What do I install? Ubuntu or Mint. I like the sound of Mint better, because it has a cooler name (sorry), there’s a new release due out soon and that’s what Dan will be recommending to new users. How soon is soon? I asked google (Dan went to have dinner) and apparently the beta came out only on May 12th. Not really soon then, I’m guessing. Ubuntu Hardy it is. Now to find spare 8 GB…

Dan added these pithy words on May 23 08 at 1:04 pmWax on, wax off! I might have to make you watch you this film ;) It’s gonna be fun… I hope for both of us. I’ll check when Linux Mint 5.0 is due out, I think it might be sooner than you think.
Thanks for the mention :)
Heavensrevenge added these pithy words on May 28 08 at 4:21 pmWell Dan, I don’t quite think you should skip over mentioning PCLinuxOS to new users. I’ve had almost 10 successful “permanent” Linux migrants fresh from doze to PCLinuxOS. Even thought hardcore experienced arch, slack, and Lunar Linux fans won’t like it, for new users, it Just works, and hey, REMEMBER mandriva is ok, but id still say either mint, pclinuxos, or opensuse for purely new users.
ana added these pithy words on May 28 08 at 4:39 pmif it’s any consolation there’s no way i’m ‘migrating’ to linux completely, if only for the fact that i need my final cut pro.
